ROSH HASHANA GREETINGS FROM OUR CO-CHAIR

Dear friends,

for having our own fully staffed hospital with 61 departments and outpatient clinics. Much larger cities such as Modiin and Beit Shemesh do not have their own hospital. There have been 88,000 visitors seen in the ER in 2025 . After the year we have had, we all know that we need sheltered facilities. By the time this article is published we expect to have broken ground on building a new sheltered emergency hospital and we are fundraising to help towards that. I saw firsthand the necessity of having a sheltered hospital when Charlie had surgery on a morning when Iranian missiles were being fired at Israel in June of 2025 . Patients from all over the hospital had been moved about. Charlie came out of difficult, lengthy surgery and I watched in amazement as the staff built an intensive care unit around him in as safe a place as they were able to find. Over 800 babies are born each month including many grandchildren and great grandchildren of people in Netanya. Doctors in our community work there as do nurses, Physios and others as well as many people who volunteer their time there. That is why when Ken Schwartz, then Chairman, asked me to become Co-Chair of Laniado Supporters with him I volunteered. Ken and I , our Executive Board, our Board of management together with Eli Knoller , our Director of Development , Sue Levy our Administrator and Malky her assistant , and all the volunteers who assist them in the office, are working so hard to raise funds to help the hospital to help its patients. What have we done during that time: • December event in conjunction with the Tarbut Committee of YINN – an evening with a clown trained to raise the spirits of patients in hospital. • Purim greeting cards, both online and hardcopy • Annual Quiz and supper with our Quizmaster, Alan Gold

You may have known my beloved husband Charlie, but many of you only knew him as the smiling face in a wheelchair or in his electric buggy. What you would not have seen, or thankfully could not see, was the multifaceted, highly complex medical conditions that existed under his colourful

clothing. Since his passing in October last year, I have increased my involvement with the Laniado Supporters. It is my small way of trying to repay the hospital. Over 30 years ago, when I was a tourist here, Laniado hospital saved my life, and more recently it gave my beloved husband, Charlie ז"ל nearly 5 additional, bonus years to his life. Charlie was treated in nearly every ward in the hospital (apart from maternity and Obs & Gynecology of course!) and I saw first-hand what the hospital can do. Was it always perfect over our very frequent emergencies, and his long admissions over those nearly 5 years? What I saw showed me some areas in desperate need of additional investment, where money can certainly help; and it also showed me what expertise and compassion can achieve. As a daily, if not twice daily visitor, I also saw the benefit of having a hospital so close to home. Charlie was discharged from hospital by his Kupa to complex nursing care facilities in South Netanya, in Raanana and in Kfar Saba. None of them could deal with his myriad of conditions and I was at least able to recover a little of my strength when, as happened on each occasion, he sadly became very ill and was readmitted close to home in Laniado . Laniado may have started off its life in 1975 as a tiny hospital. Today it is a medical campus providing the highest level of care to 500,000 people in the Sharon region of Israel. I know that I am very grateful

The Tessler Academic School of Nursing - Distribution of Scholarships Wednesday 10 th June 2026

On Wednesday 10 th June a large number of donors and members of the Supporters of Laniado Hospital gathered in the Chicago Auditorium of the Tessler Academic School of Nursing for the annual distribution of Scholarships. The Scholarships were given to students of the Nursing School and nurses who work in the hospital but are doing specialist courses. The programme began with Vivienne Simenoff , Co Chair of the Supporters , welcoming everyone. She was followed by Eli Knoller , Director of Development and Community Affairs. There were also greetings by Nadav Chen , the C.E.O . of Laniado , Dr Ester Strauss Menahelet of the

Nursing School and Shimrit Rony , Director of Nurses Services . Dr Aryeh Simmonds , director of the NICU at Laniado Hospital spoke and encouraged the students by telling them of how positive an influence a nurse is on a patient – whatever age – just born or elderly. All told the nurses of their importance and how much a smile means to each and every patient and their families. Sara Shreiber one of the students thanked everyone for coming.

First in Israel: *Laniado Hospital and ALUT Launch an Autism-Adapted, Trauma-Informed Pediatric Emergency Department Initiative*

The initiative includes in-depth staff training, a sensory adapted treatment room, a dedicated family guidance app, and a joint study Laniado, ALUT, and Tel Aviv University , Laniado Hospital and ALUT (The Israeli Society for Children and Adults with Autism) are launching a joint initiative making Lani ado’s Pediatric Emergency Department the first Medical Center in Israel to be fully autism-accessible and trauma-informed . This comprehensive move encompasses deep staff training alongside sensory tools and clinical adaptations. These include an isolated "Snoezelen" treatment room equipped with dimmable lighting, noise-canceling headphones, and a heated waterbed. Future phases will include an online knowledge protocol, a dedicated pain questionnaire, a training module for onboarding new employees. Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is a key partner in this initiative, funding part of the development costs for training module, the online knowledge protocol, and the accompanying research. Children with autism and other special needs visit emergency rooms at a significantly higher rate than the general population. This high frequency often stems from the difficulty community medical teams face in handling the complex nature of treating these children, due to communication barriers and past medical traumas. However, a standard Emergency Department environment poses severe sensory, cognitive, emotional, and communicative challenges. It is an unpredictable, fast paced environment filled with sensory triggers, loud noises, bright lights, long wait times, physical contact, unfamiliar procedures, multiple caregivers, and a high uncertainty. Emergency Department teams do not always possess sufficient knowledge about autism, and the physical layout is rarely adapted. This reality complicates case management and distresses the child, the parents, and the medical staff, often leading to a traumatic experience. As part of this initiative, the Emergency Department staff underwent extensive training by ALUT. The curriculum covered autism, trauma, pain management, recognizing identifying distress signals, debriefing clinical events, de escalation techniques, personalized accommodation cards, integrative teamwork, and tailored communication with families. Additionally, ALUT and Laniado in collaboration with the company "Ma Shlomi?" to develop "The Family's Journey in the Emergency Department" — an app designed to provide parents with explanations and practical tools to navigate the medical visit. An ongoing study by Laniado, ALUT, and Tel Aviv University accompanies the project; aiming to evaluate, not

only the patient and parent experience but also the implementation of the new model, staff feedback, and clinical management metrics The highlight of the project is the newly constructed

"Snoezelen" room built for children with autism and special needs. The room features maximum acoustic isolation from external noise and dimmable lighting to minimize sensory overload. Calming elements, such as bubble columns and custom wallpaper, have also been installed, and noise-canceling headphones are readily available. The room features with two treatment stations: a

conventional medical bed and a heated waterbed, reducing stimuli and giving patients a choice of where to receive care. A sensory wall toy provides distraction while

allowing children to select the colour and shape themes of the room. Procedures in the room will utilize distraction tools, such as Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, alongside local anesthesia or mild sedation prior to painful or anxiety induing interventions. Dedi Atas , CEO of ALUT stated: "The emergency department is one of the most challenging environments for a child with autism and their parents. Parents possess irreplaceable knowledge; they know how their child communicates, what soothes them, how they express pain, and what triggers an overload. Listening to them is not a courtesy; it is essential to delivering proper care. The Laniado project was born of the understanding that an autism-adapted and trauma-informed response must address staff training, environmental design, family communication, and the long-term knowledge retention. We thank the Laniado team for this partnership and hope this model will be adopted by other emergency departments across the Country. "

Department at Laniado , stated: "We realized that one of the most critical needs in our department was the ability to reach every child — including

those who struggle with communication or regulation, and those for whom the hospital experience is overwhelming and distressing. Transitioning to an accessible Emergency Department forced us to find flexibility within a rigid system even during emergencies, and to place the patient and their family at the center - which includes embracing parents as part of the care team. We have created an inclusive and empowering dialogue for families and staff."

Master Chef Gershon Schwadron of Boca Raton, Florida

While many visitors spend their vacation relaxing, internationally renowned Master Chef Gershon Schwadron of Boca Raton, Florida, chose a different path. During his visit to Israel, Chef Schwadron volunteered his time and expertise at Laniado Hospital where he led a special culinary workshop for the hospital's kitchen staff. Working side-by-side with the dietary team, Chef Schwadron demonstrated creative techniques for preparing nutritious., colorful, and child-friendly meals designed especially for young patients in the Pediatric Department . The workshop focused on making hospital food more appealing while meeting with the nutritional and dietary requirements essential for children's recovery. The workshop provided the hospital's culinary team with practical ideas for menu planning,

food presentation, and techniquess that can be incorporated into everyday meal prepartion for peidatric patients. "Our young patients deserve meals that are not only healthy, but also comforting and enjoyable." said Chef Schwadron . "If a delicious, beautifully present meal can bring a smile to a child's face and encourage them to eat, then we've accomplished something truly meaningful." Thank you, Chef Gershon , for reminding us that kindness, compassion, and a delicious meal can be powerful ingredients in the healing process. In addition his visit reflects the importance of volunteers and friends from around the world who contribute their professional expertise to enhance patient care.

Campaign Success: When the Sirens Soun d… Not Ever yone Can Run

Together We Made a Difference Could a community of dedicated supporters raise more than £400,000 ( $540,000 ) in just 36 hours to help build a sheltered trauma unit at Laniado Hospital ? The answer was a resounding yes!

On July 5 – 6, Friends of Laniado organizations throughout Israel and around the world united for our inspiring "When the Sirens Sound… Not Everyo ne Can Run" matching campaign. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of a major donor, every contribution made during the 36-hour campaign was doubled, allowing every gift to have twice the impact. What followed was nothing short of remarkable.

A total of 71 fundraising teams , led by board members, volunteers, friends, and supporters, reached out to their families, friends, and colleagues. Many participants had never raised funds before, yet they quickly discovered that with passion, commitment, and a meaningful cause, fundraising can be both simple and deeply rewarding. By the end of the campaign, more than 1,400 donors from around the world had come together to demonstrate their belief in Laniado Hospital 's mission. Together, they raised over £400,000, ($540,000) bringing us significantly closer to making the new sheltered trauma unit a reality. This campaign was about far more than reaching a financial goal. It was a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when a community unites around a shared purpose. Every phone call, every WhatsApp message, every email, and every donation became part of a global effort to ensure that when emergencies strike, the People of Israel have access to safe, life-saving medical care. We extend our deepest gratitude to every team captain who gave of their time and energy, to every volunteer who shared our message, and to each and every donor whose generosity made this achievement possible. Together, we proved that when people unite behind a worthy cause, extraordinary things can happen. Thank you for helping us build a safer future for the patients, staff, and families of Laniado Hospital.

Recently on 10 th May 2026 we held an evening of short talks and Questions & Answers by leading staff at Laniado Hospital. This took place in the Beit Knesset Tifferet, Toladano 7, Kiryat Hasharon, Netanya. On the panel were Dr Alan Zeav Siedlecki, Medical Director , Department of Allergies; Dr. Arye Simmons, Medical Director , NICU; Dr. Michael Kogan, Medical Director , Emergency & Trauma Center, and Moshe

Reich, Senior Nurse & Adminstrator. Eli Knoller, Director of Development & Community Affairs , chaired the evening and asked the panel many questions which they all answered and showed that Laniado is a caring hospital not only for the patients but also for their families. Before the evening ended the audience were invited to ask questions – and many did.

In memorium Renie Hirsch ע"ה

Irene Hirsch ע"ה , known as Renie to all, peacefully passed away in May. She was just short of 93 years old and lived together with her beloved husband, Henry ז"ל (who passed away two years ago) in Netanya. She grew up in a small town of Waterford NY, was valedictorian of her high school class and attended Cornell University. She was a school teacher, social worker, spoke several languages and played and taught guitar. She acted and directed in community plays. In Netanya Renie was a well-known and beloved figure and involved in various charitable causes. She was a member of the Supporters, together with Henry , for many, many years and was responsible for running many well- loved and very successful "Jazz Concerts" to benefit the Sanz Medical Center,Laniado hospital.. Our condolences go to her three sons, Mark, Jonathan & Daniel and their families. May all the family be consoled among the Mourners of Zion.
